Food safety is very important to protect human health from food borne illnesses and contamination of food from farm to fork.  This is an increasingly difficult challenge and of paramount importance for restaurants and foodservice operations in today’s complex supply chains.  With more links than ever in the global food supply chain, there is greater risk of contamination and foodborne illness.  In Canada, the food service industry is regulated by legislation at all three levels of government (federal, provincial and municipal).  Legislation set out the requirements that food premises need to follow to make sure their food is kept safe.  Some of it is specific to the food, like food handling, transportation and storage.  Other requirements cover things like the condition of the building and the types of equipment that need to be used.  All these things together are very important and have an impact on how safe your food is.  It is the responsibility of everyone including pest control operators working in food premises to make sure they know the rules that apply to them and to follow those rules.

Pest control operators are not only responsible for controlling insects and rodents, but they also must ensure that their pest control actions does not cause any risk of contamination of food products by pesticides and their personal hygiene.
